about EDI’s romance: while plenty of people seem to suggest it as a necessary part of her arc, no one seems to think it’s necessary for Legion’s character development. Couldn’t be anything about female characters “needing” a romance arc, could it?
I’ve wondered about that, actually! I suspect you’re right, though, and that even if Legion *didn’t* bite it, people wouldn’t clamor for romance for him in the same way they do for EDI. And, of course, there’s the likelihood that I’m more likely to encounter people being defensive about their Joker/EDI ship than uninterested parties would be. :P “You don’t like EDI”/”You don’t think she’s a person” are some of the rebuttals to complaining about that pairing. The latter being a bit ironic, given I argue she’s a person WITHOUT romance. :P
Well… long before EDI even existed, Joker outright said he was in love with his ship. Legion had no pre-existing romance bait with anyone (aside from possibly Shepard? I mean, the armor and all. We’re all too busy shipping them with Garrus and Tali for that though).
Also EDI is one singular person, whereas Legion (SPOILERS)untiltheveryend(/SPOILERS) was a host of one-thousand and something different programs adding up to a collective intelligence. It would be a really weird and extensive version of polygamy.
Joker being in love with the ship (which doesn’t nec. mean romantic love; we use love all sorts of different ways, even just here on tumblr) has no bearing on what EDI has to feel, though, or whether romantic love is necessary for her as a person. And I have seen people make the very direct assertion that romance is necessary for her to become a full person. The assertion made for legion is that individuality is necessary for person-hood. I disagree with both.
No, but whilst shackled, she wasn’t much more than the ship.
> And I have seen people make the very direct assertion that romance is necessary for her to become a full person.
I disagree with that as well. I just don’t think EDI’s bigger focus on shipping is due to her being feminine and Legion being masculine. It was set-up much more from the beginning than any Legion romance was.
